How to Protect Your Hair in a Float Tank

Float therapy offers a tranquil escape, letting you float in a warm, shallow, salt-infused pool, detached from the stresses of the world. However, if you have dyed hair, you may worry about preserving your vibrant colour against the potent effects of salt water. This article will guide you on safeguarding your hair colour during your float session.

Vibrant Hair Colour

How can floating affect dyed hair?

Float tanks are enriched with about 600kg of Epsom salt (magnesium sulphate), which, while beneficial for relaxation and sleep, can leach colour from your hair due to its high mineral content. This might necessitate more frequent colouring and lead to colour bleeding into the tank, potentially resulting in expensive maintenance issues.

Preparing your hair before the float

To ensure you have the best possible experience and to minimise any potential colour loss, follow these preparatory steps:

  • For blonde or light-coloured hair, wait at least seven days and three washes post-treatment before your floating session.
  • For darker shades (brown, black or red), extend this period to at least 14 days or seven washes.
  • Before booking your session, check that your hair does not release colour into the water or stain your towel.
  • Avoid floatation tanks if you have hair extensions or keratin treatments, as salt water can significantly reduce their durability and effectiveness.

Protecting your hair during the float

Before your session, we’ll require you to shower and wash your hair to remove lotion, body oil, hair products, deodorant, and perfume to maintain water purity. Saturating your hair with fresh water reduces salt absorption and helps protect against colour fading. We provide shampoo and body wash for your use.

Caring for your hair after the float

Post-float, use a clarifying shampoo to remove any salt from your hair. Follow up with a conditioner specially formulated for colour-treated hair to restore its natural moisture and protect against damage. Finally, gently pat your hair dry to avoid stressing the hair cuticles.
